Conferencia Informativa de Inmigración y Bienestar:
Cultura y Bienestar (CYB), an outreach program within La Familia, had their annual Immigration and Wellness Conference “Recuprando Nuestra Dignidad” (Recovering our Dignity) on Saturday, April 29th, 2017 at Junction K-8 School |298 Junction Avenue, Livermore, CA 94551
This conference was designed to help educate our Spanish speaking community on their rights with Immigration Forums, workshops on mental health (coping skills) through art, sound and breathing. The conference was led by Lupita Barattino La Familia's Mental Health Adult Educator, with the collaboration of many community leaders from Livermore Public Library, CAPE, Junction, St. Michael’s Church, St. Bartholomew Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church, The Art of Living, Cornerstone Church, and the promotoras from CYB.
Cultura y Bienestar (CYB) was able to serve 207 community members, who participated in 6 different Workshops related to Immigration and Wellness. The day began with a blessing of the grounds, where the conference where taking place, by Danza Calpulli Huitzilopoxtli, who performed indigenous dances.
Guest speakers were Dr. Ricardo Carrillo, Ms. Wendy Sanchez, Ms. Ofelia Sanchez, Mr. Christopher Martinez from Catholic Charities of the East Bay and Officer Uriel Martinez from Oakland P.D.
Mid-day, there was a Traditional Healing coordinated by Stephanie Madrid a Mental Health Youth Educator of CYB and guest drummer Arturo Carrillo. CYB was able to serve 70 community members during the traditional healing ceremonies.
All participants left both events feeling much more confident about their rights, relaxed thanks to the wellness workshops and traditional healing. The Cultura y Bienestar team of Tri-Valley along with a great number of volunteers ended their day with a feeling of accomplishment knowing that the community member that attended these workshops would sleep better that night!
