We are proud to announce a new program at La Familia: the Trauma Recovery Center, or TRC! The TRC is a program that has been established in partnership with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and, specifically, the Family Justice Center (FJC).
The TRC is designed to provide trauma-informed care to individuals who have experienced a traumatic event and are seeking mental health support. This program is funded through the California Victims Compensation Program (CalVCP) but does not require clients to have an established approval for this program. In fact, one of the unique features of the TRC program is that part of its purpose is to ensure that individuals who would otherwise be unable to receive services are able to get high-quality and responsive care.
While CalVCP has been funding TRCs for a few years, ours is the first not to be located within a hospital setting; our TRC will serve as a model for providing this type of care outside of a primarily medical setting.
The TRC consists of a variety of inter-disciplinary staff who provide wrap-around services and referrals to victims of crime and trauma. In order to facilitate this, the program is housed at the Alameda County Family Justice Center -- 470 27th Street in Oakland, CA - where the District Attorney's office has partnered with many other local organizations to house staff on-site; so victims can receive services in a one-stop center, increasing their use of and access to the support they need.
Individuals who are interested in receiving services with the TRC will first meet with one of the FJC's Navigators who will talk with them about their needs and get them connected with supports they want; appointments can be made by either calling (510) 267-8800 or emailing [email protected]. If it seems that the victim will be a good fit for the TRC's services, they will be referred a Victim Witness Advocate and/or the Medical Social Worker who is specifically and exclusively assigned to the TRC.
Those who are a good fit for the TRC mental health services will be referred to our full-time bilingual (English & Spanish) licensed therapist who will work with them to assess their needs and provide client-centered services including individual, family, or group therapy as well as psychoeducation. Services are trauma-informed and utilized evidence-based/evidence-informed interventions based on the needs of each individual.
